The big picture:
Update 10th December 2010

Only a written update this week.

Went over to a friend's place last week - with the intent to draw a 1/4 scale plan of the model railway. very soon it was obvious the layout would be too big for me to handle, and being over 21ft rather long. So I will have to start exercising my modelling license and start selectively compressing the layout.

I am also experimenting with a ply girder to be used as a trial baseboard. simply two sheets of 150mm 3mm thick ply - with blocks of 12mm ply glued virtically between boards. I changed this to having some 150mm square 12mm thick ply at the center and ends. The ends and some intenral crose ribs also made the same way.

That is the theory. My model railway club has nentioned this method, bu I wanted to try it myself. So I got some ply custom cut - all I had to do is assemble one girder. I only glued them down to see how to would go. Well lengthwise it's strong, but twists a bit laterally, and even folds with side load - to me a failure. Will take the girder to the club next week to demo.

If I get the idea to work the will form the basic baseboard for this new layout of mine.
