Planning the new layout: Plan 1
Click for full sized plan

This plan was the original off a smaller scale plan we did and changed. The plan was then transferred to a larger scale paper plan that allowed more detail. We used photocopied peco templates, reduced in size. It all was based on the flyover to the cement silo on the mountain end.

The plan as you can clearly see has a "S" shape, making it odd to most other layouts that have the standard retangle shape. What isn't drawn is the end turnback loops that have their own section. The modules were all salvaged off the old Somerton layout. Two modules that were end modules were modified with the 5 degree angle. Then th end board were repositioned and bolted to it's new adjacent module.

As you can see it is a double track mainline that heads pass the country loco depot, the "Down" yard entrance and into the station. After the staion is the yard that has a goods shed, livestock race, oil sidings and possibley a small intermodal yard. On the other side of the mainline is the grain loop. A tthe end of the yard, the "Up" yard entrnace is the climb up a curved embankment to cross over a long bridge spanning a river. Meanwhle the yard has a branch that passes over that same river and under the mainline to reach a cement silo. This was the original line and thus the formation continues after the cement silo. The mainline meanswhile is on the side of the hill as it climbs more and past the cement works. Here the layout ends.

There is a lot of shunting potential in the yards, that combine with the double track, it should keep at least 3 operators happy. It may keep more if we assign people to be signalmen as well. This plan has assumed there are two signalboxes. "A" Box is at the turntable end and is fact just been decommissioned - the panel is in the Station building.

"B" Box is near the "Up" yard Entrance and is a smal lever frame cross locked to the panel. ( in fact it was the old Somerton box and lever frame )
