Planning a new train room

Plan 7 - July 2004

This is the first of the plans as I construct the room. It was originally based on plan 6B, but as real world construction and design progresses - it has changed.

This plan has changed in many areas.

the lower staging loop remains, and now is partially daylighted at a critical point (where the track from "D" comes in forming the continuous connection). - this is good operationally (hand up the "hate hidden trackage club"?) and make construction better. It will be a triangle junction to the staging, so trains can restage, or head straight back to "B".

The Peninsular is redesigned, and the grades settled on. I has feared the grade from the first station "B" to the second stastion "C" was going ttooo be too steep, but my now worked out standard grade will be OK ( up 2cm for every 90cm)

The passing Loop "E" was always a interesting idea on my part. Did it have to be half way between "C" and "H" ? I Have rediesigned the mine to comm off the loop at the "H" end, soI only have the passing loop down that side. The Mine at "F" is simplified, and makes for better scenic treatment.

The Upper level benefits as well, "G" is still built above the mai station "B" below, but I don't care - It will not be used too much !

Station "H" is redesigned with the peninsular in mind. There was to be a triangle here - removed. Fpr Station "I" I took the loco depot and placed it closer to the station. I then took the branch under the main to service the oil indistry "J" before headin to the terminus at "L". However I'm thinking of putting in a Triangle ( using that post in the way to support it in place of a turntable).

Branchline Station "L" probally will not be done - it's needs another hole into the sun room.

Now to some detail on the plan.
  • A - Lower return loop staging
  • B - MAIN STATION, this is the biggest station on the layout.
  • C - The smallest mainline station. The station generates alot of intermodel traffic
  • D - Continuous loop connection/junction back to "A"
  • E - Passing loop
  • F - Industrial/Mine spur.
  • G - Grain siding /Loop.
  • H - A busy station, but not that big. The passing loop is at one end of the station.
  • I - The second biggest station on the layout, still being a 4 track yard.
  • J - Oil siding.
  • K - Upper return loop staging
  • L - A small branch terminus station.
