Train Numbers

This is a summary not a definitive page on CSX train numbers.

A Train needs a id so all on the system know where is from, where it's going, what it generally carries and goes, how important it is. CSX and all other railway have their own train numbering system.

CSX seems to use North and South as their direction. Generally most train ending with a even number go North, and ending with a odd number go South. L,D and W series are directionless.

Here's a basic sum up:
  • M - Manifest/Main freight covers Manifest and autorack trains.
  • i - Intermodal.
  • G - Grain.
  • X - extra train of the same number.
  • L - Local.
  • D - Deadheads/Recrew of road trains or locals.
  • A train can be diverted forming a curfew alt train, eg If i140 has to divert due to a curfew, we see it called i840.
  • W - Maintenance Way&Works(mow) + Special inspection trains.
  •   - Hirails and small Mow movements do not get a train number.
I have taken the "expected time" out as it's too hard to predict.

This list is not static , it evolves. CSX does change trains, routes,numbers etc. 		Current trains:
